Stories sought on history of iconic Dome

Residents are being asked for their memories and experiences of the Spanish City Dome.

A special ‘Dome Memories’ event is taking place at Whitley Bay’s Customer First Centre, in York Road, on Wednesday, November 5, between 10am and 2.30pm.

The event aims to capture the significant part the Dome has played in the social fabric of Whitley Bay since the building opened in 1910.

The staffed event will offer an opportunity for members of the community to reminisce about the Spanish City in its heyday and share their own unique tales.

The stories – to be recorded and collated – will play a part in shaping the direction of the building’s future.

Mayor Norma Redfearn said: “The importance of the Spanish City in people’s hearts and memories can’t be underestimated, and this emotional significance has been one of the major drivers behind its regeneration.”

As well as stories, North Tyneside Council is keen for residents to share any memorabilia they may have of the Dome.

The event will also showcase the plans for the building, and outline the next steps in the regeneration of the site.
