Students are having a blooming good time after a successful flower show.

TyneMet College floristry students won silver in the group category at the Harrogate Flower Show while Emma Lovett took second place in the individual awards.

The competition has really boosted my confidence

The event attracts more than 1,000 exhibitions and over 100,000 visitors, and is regarded as one of the most prestigious events on the horticulture calendar.

For the group event on a ‘high street’ theme, the students worked together to create a display that encapsulated the fresh and vivid colours of a greengrocer.

Tutor, Tina Reddel, said: “The floristry students worked well together to create a contemporary concept and display.”

The theme of the individual category was ‘Blockbuster’ and Emma had to create a design that could be presented as a leading lady at a film premiere, taking inspiration from Audrey Hepburn in My Fair Lady.

Emma said: “The competition has really boosted my confidence. I loved every aspect of the show – from creating my design to seeing the displays of hundreds of floristry – winning the award was a complete shock to me.

“Initially I was nervous about entering the show, but on the day I just enjoyed the experience and any nerves just melted away.

“My tutor, Tina, has been incredibly supportive and I’ve really developed my skills at TyneMet whilst also working part-time in a local florist.”
