Summer fun at new plaza

A variety of entertainment is lined up for visitors and residents of all ages to enjoy at the new Spanish City Plaza.

The recently completed £1.2m Plaza on Whitley Bay seafront will play host to a range of performances throughout July and August.

Mayor Norma Redfearn said: “The new Plaza is a great space and the perfect setting for our programme of summer entertainment.

“It’s a wonderful addition to Whitley Bay seafront, Spanish City and Dome, which we are going to restore to its original splendour thanks to a £3.7m grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund.”

Most of the summer events and performances will take place in or around the Plaza’s amphitheatre, which features terraced steps forged from black granite.

Until July 27 there will be music, theatre and dance from the Under the Dome group, with activities inside the Dome too. For more information and tickets visit

Between August 4 and 10, there will be jazz in the afternoons, support by Capita.

From August 18 to 25, some of the region’s best buskers and street performers will feature. The ‘Edinburgh Fringe’ also comes to Whitley Bay, with performers from the renowned Scottish festival bringing their acts to North Tyneside’s seafront.

On Sunday, August 31, The Bernicia Festival will feature a full day of free live music from some of the region’s best live bands and performers. The Plaza will host the second day of this popular two-day event. For more visit
