A teenage girl was reported sexually assaulted in a car in Whitley Bay.
Police received a report that the 18-year-old woman had left the Tasty Turk takeaway on Whitley Road at around 3am on Sunday, January 4.
She was offered a lift by two men in a car, who then drove her somewhere along the sea front and she may have been sexually assaulted.
The victim told her family and police are now investigating.
The vehicle is described as a silver or grey four door vehicle, possibly an estate-type.
The occupants of the vehicle were two white men in their mid 20s, both around 5ft 11ins tall. The first was medium build with short dark hair which was longer on top, wearing a Parker-style jacket with a fur trimmed hood and black square glasses. The second man was slimmer than the first and wearing a bobble hat.
North Tyneside Acting Chief Inspector Neil Armsworth said: “We’re doing everything possible to trace these men and the vehicle and to establish exactly what has happened.
“We understand incidents such as this cause concern in the community and I’d like to reassure people extra patrols are taking place in the town to reassure residents and carry out enquiries.
“It’s important anyone who was in the area of The Tasty Turk takeaway in the early hours of Sunday morning and saw a woman getting into a vehicle, or witnessed any suspicious activity or vehicles along the sea front gets in touch with us.
“Specially trained officers are working with the victim to make sure she has the support she needs at such a distressing time. I would ask that anyone with information contacts us as soon as possible.”
Officers are reminding people on nights out to think keys, money, phone and advise people to plan how they are getting home in advance and stick together with friends.
