TRIBUTES have been paid to a teenager who was killed in a car crash which left his girlfriend injured.
Karl James Reay, of Whitley Bay, had been driving north along the A189 with his girlfriend Megan Wealleans when the accident happened near the junction with Shankhouse, near Cramlington.
The 19-year-old’s Renault Clio left the road and overturned, with Karl being pronounced dead at the scene.
Megan was taken to Wansbeck General Hospital to be treated for her injuries, which were not life threatening.
A spokesman for Karl’s mother, father and two sisters said the loss of their son and brother was “a tragic event that should never have happened”.
“He is a lovely lad who is full of energy and he will be sorely missed,” they added.
In a joint statement, Megan said she loved Karl and the 13 months together were “the best times of my life.” Megan’s family added they were very proud to have known Karl.
Police are now appealing for witnesses to the crash, which happened at around 5.05pm on Saturday, February 26.
Acting Inspector David Gould, who is leading the investigation, said: “This is a busy stretch of road. I would appeal to anyone who may have witnessed this incident or was in the area at the time to contact police.
“This is a tragic incident which sadly claimed the life of a 19-year-old male.”
