Teenagers’ games idea goes out to community

A COMMUNITY sports day will be held in North Shields on Friday organised by teenagers taking part in a summer scheme.

The free event, dubbed the Legacy Games, will take place at The Parks sports centre between 11am and 3pm.

The project was organised by young people given a day to come up with an idea for a social action project as part of the government scheme ‘Summer of a Lifetime’.

With the help of O2’s ‘Think Big’ programme and the government, they were awarded £500 to help put their idea into action.

The YMCA also added an extra £250 to the final budget.

The day will feature traditional sports day activities like an egg-and-spoon race as well as Paralympic-inspired events, including deaf-football and shoot-the-hoop.

For younger visitors there is a bouncy castle and face painting, all free of charge.

Live music will be provided by young local artists and there will be party food and a tombola.
