Thief steals handbag from car at traffic lights

A thief snatched a handbag from a car stopped at traffic lights in Whitley Bay.

The theft happened at 7.04pm on Monday, March 6, while the car was stationary at temporary traffic lights at the junction of Marine Avenue and Ilfracombe Gardens.

The offender grabbed the handbag from the front passenger seat of the car, a white Mercedes, and ran off down the back lane just before the lights.

The car driver, a 51-year-old woman, was shocked by the incident.

The handbag contained credit cards cash and a mobile phone.

Police are making enquiries into the incident and are appealing for witnesses.

Acting Neighbourhood Inspector Guy Morgan said: “We’re appealing for help from the public to find the person responsible.

“We’re also reminding people to keep valuables, including handbags, out of view inside their vehicles.

“We are treating this as an isolated incident and have additional officers on patrol in the area to reassure residents.”

Police are appealing for witnesses, or anyone who was in the area and who may have seen or heard anything suspicious, to contact them.
