Three arrests over robbery of 58-year-old

THREE men have been arrested in connection with a robbery in Longbenton.

A man was robbed while walking along Staithes Avenue at 3.40am on Monday.

The 58-year-old was approached by three men who first asked him for a cigarette and then to phone them a taxi, before kicking and punching him.

The victim suffered bruising to his face and chest and a fractured nose.

A wallet containing cash and bank cards and a watch and silver cigarette case were stolen from him.

Police arrested three men nearby aged 26, 24 and 21 on suspicion of robbery. Some of the stolen property was recovered.

Detective Sergeant Michelle Robson said: “The investigation is ongoing, and I’d urge anyone with information to contact police.”
