Three Metro stations to remain open during modernisation work
Three key Metro stations will remain open during modernisation work this summer to help local businesses.
The Metro line will be closed from Saturday, July 23, to Saturday, August 6, between Benton and Whitley Bay, with a bus replacement service in operation.
Now officials at Nexus say that Tynemouth, Cullercoats and Whitley Bay Metro stations will remain open, with trains arriving via Wallsend.
Raymond Johnstone, director of rail and infrastructure at Nexus, said: “We have tailored our work programme in the summer to ensure that Tynemouth, Cullercoats and Whitley Bay are open for business and have trains serving them.
“I totally understand how important these coastal stations are, especially in the summer months.
“It’s vital for local trade, so I’m pleased that we have been able to find a workable solution.
“During the closure between there will also be a frequent replacement bus service from Four Lane Ends.”
Meanwhile, the first 15 day line closure – Saturday, March 19, to Saturday, April 2, between Tynemouth and Shiremoor – will also see a frequent replacement bus service in operation.
The work, which forms part of the £350m Metro all change modernisation programme, will involve the replacement of track and tracks beds which are more than 50-years-old.
A total of 8.7km of track is to be replaced
The bulk of the work will be taking place during 15-day major line closures in the Spring and then in the Summer.
Nexus has already sent letters to over 3,000 households in North Tyneside to make residents aware of the forthcoming works.
It will also carry out public drop in sessions for people to find out more about the project.
Nexus previously replaced 6km of track between Wallsend and Tynemouth during 2011 and 2012.
This was followed in August 2013 by a 27 day closure to renew the tracks between Haymarket and South Gosforth.
