Tynemouth continue good start to the season with win over Durham Academy
For the second Saturday running, Tynemouth Cricket Club only had the first team in action as there was no fixture for the seconds and the thirds game at Embleton was a victim of the coastal swirling mists and a saturated strip.
The firsts hosted Durham Academy, won the toss and elected to bat.
Skipper Ben Debnam led the way with a solid 58, and his opening partner Nick Armstrong hit 28.
The pair put on 84 for the first wicket when Armstrong was replaced by Stuart Poynter.
Debnam was out with the score on 91 and a second victim for Alasdair Appleby, but Poynter made 31 to give Tynemouth a reasonable target to defend.
Wickets fell steadily and Appleby claimed 4-38 as the hosts were dismissed for 182 in the 60th over.
The Academicals lost their first wicket with 25 on the board when Tahir Khan bowled Appleby for 17.
Tynemouth made further inroads to the Durham line-up and more wickets for Khan saw them struggling at 64-5.
Finn Lonnberg had Potts caught at the wicket by Matty Brown and McBride was run out for 26.
At 97-7 it seemed all over for the visitors, but late resistance from Scott Steel with 27 and 31 not out from number 10 George Harding took Durham to only 20 short when Lonnberg returned to finish the job and bowling last man John Windows for four.
Khan recorded 5-39 off 17 overs and Lonnberg 2-15 off 8.4 tight overs.
This second fairly narrow win for the firsts is a superb start to the season.
The second team did play on Thursday and won a first round Roseworth T20 Trophy with an 11-run victory over Hylton.
Tony Turner opened and hit 21 while the swashbuckling Marcus Turner top scored with 56.
Carl Salvidge added 44 as Tynemouth posted a good target of 146-3 off their 20 overs.
Hylton had an explosive start but were restricted to 135-7 with Owen Gourley and Henry Malton each taking two wickets. Farhan Mohammed top scored with 42 but was caught by Malton off Gourley.
