Tynemouth firsts and seconds beaten by Chester-le-Street
Tynemouth Cricket Club's first and second teams suffered defeats at the hands of Chester-le-Street on Saturday.
The first XI, playing at home won the toss and elected to bat, where Ben Debnam and Nick Armstrong impressed as they put on 190 for the first wicket.
Skipper Debnam hit 111 and Armstrong 80 before a dramatic collapse saw Tynemouth reduced to 236-6 in their 60 overs.
In reply, Chester passed the target in the 59th over to win the game by three wickets.
In the second team game, Tynemouth posted 186-9 in 55 overs. Sam Robson top scored with 82 before was out through a stumping.
But again the opposition overhauled the target as Chester won by seven wickets in only the 32nd over.
The third team travelled to Clara Vale and were asked to bat first, where the openers put on 105 for the first wicket.
Chris Grieveson then fell to a simple catch for 29 as Henry Malton motored on, having been dropped on only one.
James Whiting contributed a useful 23 and the maturing Malton was then caught and bowled for 95, close to a deserving first century for the thirds.
Father Jon Malton kept up the family effort with a hard-hitting 55 before a tragic run out ended his flurry of runs with Mike McIntyre holding up the other end. Tynemouth recorded 232-5 in their 40 overs.
The Clara reply saw a wicket in the first over for skipper Neil Bennett, caught behind by the steady Lee Reed.
Then followed a long stand to frustrate Tynemouth with opener Barnaby Coulson scoring 34 and number three Peter Drake 35.
Runs were scarce as Bennett recorded 1-14 off five overs and Nick McIntyre 0-17 off eight.
Hero of the day Henry Malton broke through and went on to take 4-33 off his ten overs as the remaining wickets fell more steadily with drizzle becoming an annoyance.
Richard Warwick bowled well to take 3-13 off eight overs and Don Catley completed the task with 1-28 in his fifth over thanks to a second catch by Bennett. Clara were all out for 128 giving Tynemouth maximum points.
