There was a great, friendly atmosphere on The Tynemouth Priors Haven beach which was crowded with 15 crews from Tynemouth, Durham, Hexham, Tyne, Tees, Tyne United and Talkin Tarn.

In all there were 30 sprint races along the pier, into a challenging headwind towards the beach in choppy conditions.

Initially the races were 300m long, but due to the conditions, the course had to be shortened to around 250m.

Tynemouth started off the event with two of their three crews pitted against each other, the men’s crew, The Buoys, against a new mixed crew, The Sharks.

It was neck and neck all the way, with The Buoys getting the point by a matter of inches.

They went on to win a further two of their four races, scoring three out of four points.

The Sharks who hadn’t rowed together previously went on to win two races, for two points.

The Gulls of Tynemouth, the women’s crew, continued their successful start to the series by winning three of their four races for three points, leaving them in a strong position in the league table at third, having gained ground on the two Durham crews who are in first and second place.

The Buoys crew consisted of Michael Orr, Steve Dunn, Allan Brownrigg and Paul McCalvey.

The Gulls crew, Kerry Jordan, Allison Hepburn, Monica Buckland and Jen Remnant.

Both crews were coxed by Claire McGuire. The Sharks were coxed by Nina Laurie and the crew consisted of Chris Jenner, Chris McGuire, Mark Hyson and Katie Molyneux.

The next event is on August 7 at Talkin Tarn and is a skills based event.
