Vandals have caused hundreds of pounds worth of damage at a community centre.
Equipment was slashed and plants destroyed at the Meadows Community Centre, in Waterville Road, North Shields.
The damaged happened between 5pm on Friday, May 20, and 8.30am on Monday, May 23.
Offenders slashed the plastic membrane of poly tunnels and upturned tomato plants from their pots, damaging them in the process and causing a mess.
Police are investigating the incident and are appealing for witnesses.
Neighbourhood Inspector Neil Armsworth said: “This mindless damage has made a real mess, has cost the centre money, spoilt plants and polytunnels and upset members of the community.
“Many local people use the community centre and enjoy taking part in the gardening activities there.
“We’d appeal for anyone with information about those responsible to contact police.
“We work closely with partners including the local authority to tackle anti-social behaviour and officers as we know this impacts on the quality of life for local residents. Officers will take action to deal with offenders appropriately and ask for help from the community to tackle the problem.”
Anyone with information should contact police on 101, quoting log number 325 of 23/05/16 or ring the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
