About 70 people turned out at the Links club to hear Ann, of Whitley Bay, read excerpts from two of her 29 novels and talk about her career in crime fiction.

The former probation officer took part in a question-and-answer session and signed books for those present, donating £1 to the mission for each of the 36 copies sold.

Ann also discussed the inspiration for her most popular characters, including Vera Stanhope, played by Brenda Blethyn in the ITV series based on her books, and Shetland’s Jimmy Perez, portrayed by Douglas Henshall in BBC1’s adaptations.

Just over £516 was raised altogether.

Ann was introduced and thanked by club member Barry Wallace and mission superintendent Peter Dade.
