Walkers will go wall out to thank kidney unit medics

A TEAM of hospital workers is planning a five-day walk from one end of Hadrian’s Wall to the other to raise funds for charity.

The five-strong team – including Angela and Graham Flett, of Victoria Terrace in Whitley Bay – will set off from Bowness-on-Solway in Cumbria, on Monday, May 7, walking up to 20 miles a day, and aim to finish, 84 miles later, on the Friday of that week at Segedunum in Wallsend.

All sponsorship money raised will be spent on kidney research at Newcastle’s Freeman Hospital.

The walkers, all staff in the Freeman’s catering department, decided to raise cash for their colleagues in its kidney research unit to thank them for caring for Graham, a polycystic kidney disease sufferer.

The 47-year-old said: “We want to raise as much as possible for the charity because the hospital has been great in looking after me and controlling the disease.

“I have always received excellent treatment, and the knowledge and advice that the doctors at the hospital have given us enables me to lead a normal life while dealing with the disease, so this is for them.”
