I sailed in a hospital ship in 1942 through the Mediterranean, from Tripoli in Libya to Alexandria. Allied shipping was regularly attacked by German bombers and I wasn’t at all sure that our blazing lights were a good idea.

But, in fact, the only hazard was an infestation of cockroaches, which dropped in our bunks and turned up in our mugs of tea.
