Warning over salesmen selling fish on doorsteps

Residents are being warned to be on their guard against door-to-door fish salesmen.

The salesmen, known to operate across the north east and further afield, have attempted to sell fish in the borough.

We would advise residents never to deal with cold-callers on their doorstep.

Householders can end up handing over large amounts of money for more fish than they need, with no guarantee over the type of fish purchased or its weight plus there is also a risk that it may not have been refrigerated while being transported.

The warning has been issued by the Trading Standards and Environmental Health Food Safety services, provided on behalf of North Tyneside Council by Capita Local Government.

Senior Trading Standards Officer David Hedley said: “We would advise residents never to deal with cold-callers on their doorstep.

“We know in the past they have sold far more fish to people than they require and there are also doubts over the weights and type of fish.

“Most importantly there is a real risk to health if there is no refrigeration during transit of the fish.”
