Sport England awarded Whitley Bay Golf Club £75,000 towards building the facility, which was opened by club president Lord Hastings.

The Indoor Golf Studio will have many purposes, encouraging local people and disabled people to get into golf, as well as providing alternatives for players during periods of bad weather.

Officials also hope it will be a place where members of the club’s thriving junior section can help develop and improve their game.

The studio consists of both teaching and playing bays – including providing simulated golf technology which means golfers can play 16 famous courses all over the world.

The sophisticated simulation systems analyse players’ swings, offering the opportunity for golfers to continue improving their skills.

The technology provides golf professional David Twizell with facilities to teach indoors and also gives information used in club fitting.

Whitley Golf Club chairman Keith Atkinson said: “We are delighted to have secured this investment which will upgrade our facilities and enhance the improvements to the course currently ongoing.”

“It will allow us to encourage more people to play golf from junior to senior years and is a tribute to the 2012 Olympic legacy.”
