Youngsters have put the wheels in motion designing a car to take part in a competition later this year.
Year 7 pupils at Norham High School, in North Shields, are learning all about engineering and how to modify their own Formula 24 Greenpower race car in order to race at Croft Circuit in July.
The team is being mentored by Michael Burton, head of engineering at Tynemet College, who along with staff, has already been supporting the pupils to learn about the mechanics of the car, safe use and maintenance of batteries and aerodynamics.
Over the next few months the pupils will test run the car and look at how to maximise the batteries for the two 90 minute endurance races they will compete in against other schools from around the region.
A school spokesperson said: “This is a fantastic opportunity for these pupils to also learn about project management and give them a real insight into the world of engineering, marketing and STEM related activities.”
