Whitley Bay and Tynemouth Hockey Club's ladies' win weekend double header
Whitley Bay and Tynemouth Hockey Club's ladies' first team had a great weekend as they beat Durham University 4-0 on Saturday and then second placed Leeds 1-0 on Sunday.
Unless Fylde mess up their final game and Whitley Bay score eight more than they do, they can only hope to finish second.
Meanwhile, returns to fitness in the Whitley Bay men’s hockey squad were not enough to secure all three points on Saturday as they had to come back late on to seal a 3-3 draw at home to Wakefield.
Both teams struggled to find any rhythm in the open exchanges, with Whitley Bay going closest when Phil Ithurralde was unable to connect with a Chris Traynor cross.
Wakefield took the lead after some confusion at the back. Steven Hill stopping as he thought the umpire had halted play, but it allowed Ollie Holmes a free shot on goal.
It was not long before Whitley Bay were level and then ahead at the break.
James Redpath equalised from a penalty corner and then Jonathan Stoddart turned the ball over high up the pitch.
In the second half Wakefield levelled, Greg Moorhouse this time with a strong drag-flick from a penalty corner.
They then took the lead through Simon Ball at a penalty corner. Moorhouse went the same side with another drag-flick but defender Jervis Fleming was able to pick the ball above his head, only to have the ball unfortunately land at Ball’s feet and he calmly finished.
As time ticked on and Wakefield thought they had done enough to win all three points, Stoddart stepped up and scored from yet another penalty corner of the game. This time he was able to flick the ball into the side netting as Whitley’s first attempt had been saved by keeper James Jones.
Whitley will host Timperley on Saturday with their last home game of the season as they look to finish on a high.
