Whitley Bay collection raises £574 for charity
A collection held by Tynemouth Rotary Club at a Whitley Bay supermarket raised £574 for the charity Marie Curie.
All shoppers handing over cash to collectors, all wearing yellow hats, at the Morrisons superstore in Hillheads Road were given Marie Curie daffodil lapel badges to thank them for their generosity.
Collection organiser Bryan Rayner, a past president of the club, said: “The hats attracted a lot of attention and also a few ribald comments, but the shoppers were very generous in supporting what is a very popular charity.
“We must also thank the staff at Morrisons who allowed us to collect and were very helpful on the day.
“Marie Curie is one of the three charities chosen by our president, Archie McGlynn, to raise money for, the others being the Alzheimer’s Society and the Motor Neurone Disease Association.
“It was a wonderful collection for a wonderful cause.”
