Hoggarth Associates has completed the first phase of a £20m project in Durham for London-based Alumno Developments, carrying out a survey for asbestos and managing any potential related problems.

Main contractor Kier is now moving forward with plans to create more than 400 student flats at the Sheraton Park site, and they are due to be ready by summer next year.

Preliminary work on the project began back in 2003, and Hoggarth Associates, based in Marine Avenue in Whitley Bay, has been called in several times over the years to check for asbestos at the site, home to the Edwardian landmarks Sheraton House and Neville House.

Company secretary Lynne Hoggarth said: “We pride ourselves on being accurate and responsible to our clients and ourselves.”

“Asbestos can be a dangerous material if not approached correctly.

“It’s a great feeling when clients return after repeated satisfaction to use our specialist knowledge.

“Many of our clients have returned to use our services because they feel safe, and we ensure they are not exposed to the legal pitfalls of asbestos when it is mismanaged.”
