Whitley Bay Golf Club juniors, who won the Northumbria Junior League for the first time since 1980.

The team convincingly finished top to qualify for the final stages which were held at Morpeth Golf Club.

In the morning semi-final the team beat Blyth 10-2 in a match which was closer than the score suggests.

In the other semi-final, Hexham defeated holders Ponteland by the same score.

The afternoon final against Hexham was tense but Whitley Bay won 7-5.

The club was represented in the finals by junior captain Matthew Wood, vice-captain Jack Suttie, Rosie Belsham, James Burston, Brandon Jones and Tom Swinney.

In the league stages, Aaron Blackwood, Brad Mann, Alex Jay, Charlotte Pickering and Stephen Turner, also played for the team and contributed to the overall success.

The club thanked all the parents, family and friends whose support enabled the players to participate, and to the members who give excellent encouragement to the juniors both on and off the course.

In 1980 the junior captain was Stephen Wood, so it was a fitting moment when his son Matthew was presented with the league trophy after the final.

A league presentation evening will be held at Whitley Bay later in the year.
