Whitley Bay's Steve Donaldson, a Jennings Ford worker in Gateshead.

Steven Donaldson, of Whitley Bay, completed a 12-month apprenticeship programme at the firm’s Eslington Park dealership in Gateshead with the aim of landing a job as a sales representative in its parts department.

That ambition has now been fulfilled by the 24-year-old as he has not only gained hands-on experience through on-the-job training but has also secured a national vocational qualification in vehicle parts.

Steven said; “I thoroughly enjoyed the apprenticeship.

“It was the perfect option for me as it allowed me to learn new skills, gain additional qualifications and earn a wage at the same time, and now I have secured a full-time job, which is absolutely fantastic and a dream come true.”

Working as part of a four-strong team, Steven is responsible for ordering parts for customers and staff, monitoring stock control and inputting orders onto a computer system, as well as dealing with private customers and business clients.

Parts manager Colin Ramshaw said; “As a company, we are committed to the apprenticeship programme, with many youngsters having already been given opportunities across a variety of departments within our branch network across the region.

“Steven is an enthusiastic and keen individual and an asset to the parts department at Gateshead.”

Steven became interested in cars when he passed his test at the age of 18 and then bought his first car, a 1.4 Ford Fiesta Flame model.

“I was always messing about under the bonnet because I wanted to learn how things worked,”

said the former Whitley Bay High School pupil.
