The 35-year-old was jailed for 16 weeks at North Tyneside Magistrates Court after admitting the offences.
She was also issued with a two-year restraining order not to contact the victim.
During the investigation, it was established she duped her victim out of more than £800.
Speaking after the case, North Shields Neighbourhood Inspector Mark Storey said: “I welcome this conviction and I hope it sends a message to anybody who feels they can take advantage of vulnerable people in our society.
“We advise relatives and neighbours to keep an eye on elderly friends and loved-ones. If people are suspicious of any contact they may have had with strangers, please call the police.
“This has been a manipulative crime and the victim felt as though he was in a position to trust this woman.
“I would strongly advise people to be mindful when giving money to anyone.”
