The replacement of the Norham Road Bridge – part of the A1058 Coast Road Improvement Scheme – is now underway.

Subject to preparatory works progressing as planned, the bridge will be closed to all vehicles from Thursday until work is completed in Spring 2018.

Pedestrian and cyclists will still be able to use the bridge.

Diversions will be in place for drivers, and bus services 310 and W3 will be subject to diversions and operate to revised timetables.

Phil Scott, head of environment, housing, and leisure at North Tyneside Council, said: “The £7.2million A1058 Coast Road Improvement Scheme is designed to improve road safety, reduce journey times, enhance public transport reliability and provide better facilities for pedestrians and cyclists.

“The first two phases of the scheme (at Beach Road and at Billy Mill) have been completed on time and on budget. Phase three covers the demolition and replacement of Norham Road Bridge. We understand this work will cause inconvenience to residents in the local area, so we are committed to keeping everybody informed throughout.”

Information is available on the council’s website, and regular e-bulletins provide specific detail of works as the scheme progresses.
