A key section of the A19 in North Tyneside is to be closed for essential bridge maintenance to be carried out.

The section near Shiremoor will be closed from Wednesday, August 5.

The work will involve the replacement of bridge joints and waterproofing of the bridge deck above the Coast Railway as it passes under the A19.

Highways England project manager Michael Hoult said: “We will be working 24 hours to ensure the work is carried out as quickly as possible meaning any disruption to drivers is kept to a minimum.

“When complete these works will prolong the life of the carriageway and the railway bridge and avoid the need for future weight or traffic restrictions on the A19.”

The work will be carried out in two phases.

From 8pm on Friday, August 7, until 6am on Monday, August 10, the A19 southbound and northbound carriageways above the Holystone Interchange will be closed.

Traffic will be diverted off the A19 via the slip roads at Holystone Interchange, around the circulatory and back up to the A19.

From Monday, August 10, there will be weekday 24 hour closures of the A19 Holystone Interchange southbound exit slip road and A19 northbound entry slip road at Holystone Interchange.

Traffic will be diverted to the Silverlink/Coast Road Interchange.

Following completion of phases one and two the replacement of the bridge joints will take place overnight, between 8pm and 6am.

This will involve the full closure of one carriageway plus lane 2 of the opposite carriageway at different times.

For the works on the northbound carriageway – between August 17 and 20 – the carriageway will be closed with traffic diverted via the A186 and the B1322 to the Killingworth Interchange.

During the southbound carriageway closure, currently planned for August 21 and 26, the same diversion will be in place in reverse.
