Yoga pair's delight at monthly award
A yoga studio set up by two former nurses has been named North Tyneside Business of the Month.
Yoga Hens, based in West Allotment, offers a wide range of adult and children yoga classes for beginners to advanced, with a focus on improving mental wellbeing and physical health.
It was launched in January 2018 by two friends and former nurses Angela Yildiz and Stacey Richardson.
The pair initially met at Northumbria University, and were both learning disability nurses, when they discovered yoga as part of their own respective health journeys.
After benefitting from it, they trained to become instructors, turning their hobby into a business.
Yoga Hens has been designed to be fully inclusive and provide a safe and welcoming environment to everyone, regardless of age or ability.
It offers a range of classes, from chair yoga, relax and restore to help to promote sleep and combat anxiety, to more specialist classes, such as runner and athlete workshops to physically and mentally prepare competitors.
Stacey said: “I fell in love with yoga the minute I found it and it made such a difference to my life. However, I do appreciate that yoga can seem like a closed community and people are perhaps fearful of getting started.
“We set up Yoga Hens to make yoga accessible to everyone and given the variety of people to come through our doors over the past few months, I think it shows that yoga really can work for everyone.”
She added: “Our classes are about so much more than the yoga posture itself. We aim to encourage people to be kind to themselves and help them to look after their mental health and wellbeing, as well as improve their physical fitness.”
Angela said: “We’ve aimed to create a real sense of community at our studio and the entire experience that the studio offers is becoming as much a part of the session as the class itself.
“It’s not just a yoga class. While Stacey and I are not currently practising nursing, our professional background sets us apart and means we can take a totally holistic approach to the classes we teach and the support we can provide.”
Karen Westgate, project officer at North Tyneside Council said: “We received so many nominations from people who attend classes at Yoga Hens who all talked about the difference that Angela and Stacey have made to their lives in such a short space of time that they were obvious and deserved recipients of this month’s title.”
North Tyneside Council’s Business Factory launched the Business of the Month campaign in 2017 to highlight the quality and variety of the businesses in the area and to provide ongoing support.
Nominations can be tweeted to The Business Factory using #NTCBiz, posted on its Facebook page or emailed to [email protected]
