Teenager Abel Petho has scooped first prize in a curry cooking competition by wowing judges with his lamb masala dish.
The 18-year-old, from Northumberland Park won the under-18 category of the Junior Curry Chef Competition 2013 in Bradford.
He perfected the recipe with the help of John Connell, who was crowned North East Chef of the Year last year.
And he impressed the judges with his ability to cook with a wide range of herbs and spices.
He is now planning to serve his curry to the public at an event at Newcastle College’s Chef’s Academy restaurant and wants to gain industry experience working in a kitchen before continuing his training.
He said: “I’m over the moon with this win, especially as Bradford is known for its passion for curry.
“I’ve cooked this dish so many times in order to perfect it, so it was great to be able to get it right on the day for the judges.
“I’ve received so much help and support from John, as well as all the staff at the Chef’s Academy, which has given me the belief to go on and win more competitions.”
Abel is studying a level 3 diploma in advanced professional cookery at Newcastle College.
