A youngster suffered serious leg injuries after a hit and run collision in Longbenton.

A car collided with an eight-year-old boy in West Farm Avenue directly opposite the Boulevard shopping centre.

But the car failed to stop at the scene and drove off.

The accident happened at 6.40pm on Sunday, February 21.

The boy was taken to the RVI hospital with a serious leg injury where he remains.

A police spokesperson said: “The car involved is believed to be a silver coloured VW Passat car.

“The car is likely to have damage to the drivers side or the front and may have a damaged wing mirror.”

Enquiries are ongoing into the collision and police are appealing for anyone with any information to contact them on 101 quoting reference number 0891 21/02/16.
