A BATTLING performance by West Allotment saw them take a well deserved point in a goalless draw with league leaders Team Northumbria.
On a glorious day at the university sports ground it was the home side that bossed the early exchanges but failed to really test Ames in the Celtic goal.
During an entertaining, fast paced first half West Allotment threatened the most, Gary Day and Dean Lee forcing good saves from Team Northumbria’s goalkeeper Andrew Jennison.
Allotment would have gone in at the break pleased with their first half display matching the league leaders in all areas.
Team Northumbria unsurprisingly took the game to Allotment in the second half but despite heavy periods of pressure failed to create any clear cut chances due to Allotment’s committed defending.
The main threat came from the home side’s set pieces, their towering defenders having numerous attempts on goal but they were unable to find the goal their side were desperately searching for.
Allotment goalkeeper Ames made an excellent save in the 70th minute, turning a close range snapshot onto the bar after Allotment failed to clear their lines following a free kick but this was one of the few defensive lapses in a superb performance from West Allotment’s back four.
Allotment spent much of the second half on the back foot but threatened on the break as Team Northumbria pushed more and more men forward in search of the winner, leaving gaps at the back that were nearly exploited on a couple of occasions.
Team Northumbria captain Gavin Donoghue prevented Allotment from potentially grabbing a winner of their own by superbly controlling and clearing a long ball when under pressure, stopping Day going clear through on goal.
No winner was to be found for either side and Allotment claimed a very well earned point thanks to a resolute performance against a Team Northumbria side that is used to winning.
After a heavy defeat in midweek, West Allotment manager Paul Stoneman will no doubt be delighted with his side’s reaction against one of the best teams in the league.
Allotment’s next game is on Saturday against Ryton & Crawcrook Albion, kicking off at 3pm at Whitley Park.
