Bay A win local derby to earn last four place in cup

FIRST division Whitley Bay A gained an emphatic victory over rivals Tynemouth United to progress through to the Northumberland Minor Cup quarter-finals.

Sean Jobson, Alex Redfearn, Darren Reay, Marc Nicholson and Gav Hathrick all got on the scoresheet as they ran out 5-2 winners. Lee Garwood and Steven Matthews scored for United.

Last season’s Benevolent Bowl winners Alnwick Town look likely to be adding to their haul of eight Northern Alliance championships after a Tom Vickers double helped them see off Carlisle City 3-2 to move four points clear at the top of the premier division.

Gateshead Rutherford claimed a valuable three points in their battle against relegation, with a comfortable 3-0 victory over bottom side Cramlington Town.

Isaac Mitchell put the home side ahead before goals from Craig Horsfall and substitute Eddie Keenan – his first for the club – wrapped up the win for Rutherford.

Rob Watson and Garth Armstrong were on target for division one side Cullercoats in their 2-0 win over Peterlee, while North Shields Athletic endured a crushing 4-0 defeat at the hands of Heddon. Daniel Robinson, Mark Hope, Kevin Irwin and Jason Pearson all getting on the scoresheet.

Division two Whitley Bay Town clung on to beat Seaton Burn 2-1 after Nicky Hara’s 88th minute strike halved the deficit to set up a nervy finish.

Cullercoats Custom Planet won their game by the same scoreline, with Dan Haggerston scoring twice against Red House Farm. Lee Johnson netted Red House’s consolation.

Hebburn Reyrolle moved six points clear at the top after a 2-1 win over Amble United. Alan Pegram netting a 74th minute winner after Shannon Forth’s opener for Mark Collingwood’s unbeaten side was cancelled out by United’s Lee Harker.
