Cullercoats exit Combination Cup to Students

Cullercoats FC seniors entertained a strong Newcastle University side for the second weekend running at Links Avenue on Saturday.

Having won the league meeting the previous weekend, Cullercoats were looking for the double in the Combination Cup.

But the undergraduates made the early running and took a 2-0 lead in the first 15 minutes.

The home side rallied and pulled a goal back from central midfielder Elliot Mitchell on 17 minutes when his shot bounced high in the box and looped over the advancing keeper to make it 2-1 at the break.

The game became stretched in the second half as Cullercoats pushed for an equaliser, but it was the visitors who grabbed the crucial goal on the hour to make it 3-1.

They added a fourth to secure the result in the closing stages.

Cullercoats return to league action on Saturday with an away trip to Newcastle Chemfica at Cochrane Park, Benton, kick-off 2.30pm.
