Cullercoats FC Under-21s got their Champions League Cup campaign off to a flying start with an opening group stage win at home to Ellington on Sunday.
After a poor start where they went two down in the first 20 minutes, Cullercoats stormed back to take a 4-2 half-time lead with two goals from Jake Newstead and one each from Stephen Moat and skipper Lloyd Leigh from the penalty spot.
The second half was just as open with both teams playing well on the break.
Newstead completed his hat-trick to extend the lead before Ellington pulled one back.
Christopher Barnfather replaced the injured Dan Tweddle and added a sixth for the home team before Ellington scored a late fourth to make the final score 6-4 in what was a hugely entertaining cup tie.
Newstead was named man of the match’ by the Ellington manager for an excellent and clinical display up front.
Cullercoats will face further group games against Killingworth and Seaton Burn in the new year.
Cullercoats FC enter their centenary year in 2015 and begin the celebrations with a Burns Supper on Friday, January 23, at Cullercoats Crescent Club.
