Cullercoats U21s in beat Whitley Bay Boys Club in derby contest
Cullercoats U21s made the short trip to neighbours Whitley Bay Boys Club on Sunday for a Northumberland U21 League game and ran out 2-0 winners.
A competitive contest played out on a pitch showing signs of fatigue from the recent poor weather made it impossible to play passing football.
The deadlock was broken by Cullercoats defensive midfielder, Martin Cobley, latching onto a clearance to volley into the bottom corner from 22 yards. It was the first meaningful shot on target of the game.
In the second half both teams adopted a more direct approach due to the pitch deteriorating further.
On 70 minutes a long ball from the excellent Lloyd Leigh, playing central midfield, picked out attacking midfielder Stephen Moat in the box. As he rounded the keeper he was pulled down and a penalty awarded, which Leigh duly dispatched before Cullercoats saw out the remainder of the game with some steadfast defending as Whitley Bay Boys Club pressed for a way back into the contest.
