Cullercoats FC U21s entertained new counterparts Cullercoats Doves in the Northumberland U21 League on Sunday at Links Avenue.
This was their first competitive meeting as the senior section continues to develop and expand at the seaside club.
The game got off to an eventful start with the Doves winning a penalty inside two minutes when striker Daniel Fletcher was fouled in the box. However, the resultant penalty was saved by U21’s keeper Dave Cooper.
The U21s then took the lead on eight minutes when Stephen Moat set up striker Jake Greener, who dispatched a shot past the advancing keeper.
Both teams pressed the play and created a number of chances. Greener hit the post before an Elliot Mitchell header was parried by the Dove’s keeper and followed up by Christopher Barnfather who scored from close range to make it 2-0 at the break.
The U21s started the second half on the offensive and extended their lead when a right wing corner by Lloyd Leigh was headed home by Mitchell.
The Doves continued to create chances and were unlucky when a Fletcher strike hit the top of the right post.
However, the U21s took control and added four goals in the final quarter. The first on 77 minutes was scored by Greener following a Ryan Nelson cross. Mitchell volleyed home a Leigh free kick before Greener completed his hat-trick following an excellent break and cross from the right by Kallum Percy. Ryan Nelson then scored the goal of the match two minutes from time with a fine shot from outside the box which flew into the top right hand corner to make the final score 7-0.
The result was cruel on Doves, who created a number of chances and never gave up the fight.
Strikers Greener (U21s) and Fletcher (Doves) were the respective man of the match awards winners for their fine performances.
