Event aims to be on the ball

FINAL preparations are being made to a football tournament.

Only a few weeks remain until the start of the 27th annual North Tyneside Youth Football Tournament.

And local managers and coaches are being urged to get their entries in quickly.

More than 1,00 young footballers will be taking part in the three-day tournament – from Thursday, July 28, to Saturday, July 30 – at Churchill Playing Fields in Whitley Bay.

A range of teams from around the borough and beyond will play in a series of matches.

For boys there are eight categories, from under eights to under 15s, while there is an under 16s category for girls.

For an application form or for more information about entering, contact (0191) 643 7409, email events@northtyneside.gov.uk or visit www.northtyneside.gov.uk

Coun Glynis Barrie, cabinet member for community services, said: “The tournament is always full of talent and sportsmanship, and is a fantastic way to encourage young people to get involved in sport and keep active.

“People in the area are very passionate about football and this is what makes the tournament such a success year after year.”

Top sporting heroes and many of today’s professionals have played in the tournament, including Alan Shearer, Michael Carrick, Wes Brown, Lee Clark and Michael Chopra, while scouts from the region’s top pro clubs visit the tournament to monitor young talent.

Spaces are still remaining in a number of categories.
