This followed on from a 1-1 draw against Newcastle Benfield in their opening fixture of the season at home on Saturday.

Both sides had early chances with a free kick from Jeff Smith saved by the Billingham keeper.

Just two minutes later a Billingham attempt was cleared off the line, but clear-cut chances were at a premium. There was not a lot between the sides and at half-time it remained 0-0.

In the second half the visitors looked the better side, although Smith curled a shot over the bar for the Hillheads outfit.

Home keeper Lister had to make a smart save to keep the scores level, but Billingham eventually broke the deadlock after 60 minutes when Hutchinson fired into the bottom corner.

Three minutes later it was 0-2 when Hannah met a cross from the right to double his side’s advantage.

Whitley tried to finish on a high, but it was the visitors who went on to score a third. They were awarded a penalty in the 90th minute and Hutchinson converted from the spot for his second of the game to give Billingham a deserved victory.

This weekend Whitley Bay turn their attention to the FA Cup when they take on Hebburn Town at home on Saturday.

They are then back in league action next Tuesday (August 13) with another home game against Bishop Auckland.
