A TEENAGE footballer played his part in helping his country to victory.
Left back John Grey, part of TyneMet’s North East Sports Academy Football development programme, was one of only 16 selected to play for England Colleges against Wales Colleges at Port Talbot FC in Wales.
Starting only his second game for his country, Grey, pictured, played the full 90 minutes in an entertaining contest with goals galore, including four in the opening 25 minutes as England took a 3-1 lead.
The second half was a more balanced affair with defences getting back on top with England running out 4-2 winners.
Grey received excellent praise after the game from England manager Gordon Staniforth, who said: “I was delighted with John’s performance. He is a strong combative player who was our best defender.”
England Colleges Football is the official national team for FE college based players, run in partnership by British Colleges Sport and The Football Association.
Neil Baistow, head football development coach at TyneMet, said: “John had a superb game for England and was one of the stand out players in the game. He is being rewarded for his hard work and commitment both on and off the pitch.”
