THREE of the four North Shields Juniors Under-11 sides returned to action after losing several weeks to the bad weather.
With no games since the middle of November the players in all the sides were eager to get back on the pitch.
The Cougars were looking to extend their five-game unbeaten run in the EYD quarter-final against Wallsend Community, but they fell behind to an early goal.
Dan Henderson quickly fired North Shields level, although Wallsend soon scored again to make it 2-1.
Again the Cougars responded, first with Matty Wilson firing a great solo equaliser and then Henderson scoring his second before Jairo popped up with a predatory finish to make it 4-2 at half-time.
Tom Craig completed the scoring in the second half to send the Cougars through to the semi-finals.
Athletic were in league action and started the new year with a fine 2-1 victory over visitors Whickham Fellside.
Starting strong Shields put Whickham under pressure.
The ball was half cleared to the edge of the Whickham box where Austin Houghton took one touch to control then fire through the defence and into the net.
Whickham bagged an equaliser, but the Shields boys dug in and it culminated in a goal line scramble with shots deflected and cleared from inside the box before Alfie Justice got on the end of a skewed shot and fired home.
The Lions were not to be outdone despite an early kick off in Prudhoe. Michael McKenzie and William Kelly hit the goals for the Lions and McKenzie picked up the man of the match performance to cap a great day for the under-11s.
