Following the previous week’s postponed game against West Allotment Celtic due to inclement weather, Percy Main’s latest pre-season run out ended honours even as Northern League side Brandon United shared a 1-1 draw at Purvis Park in a game played out under three 30-minute segments.
Brandon carved out the majority of the goal scoring opportunities, particularly early on, but they had just Shane Todd’s 18th minute successful penalty kick to show for their efforts.
While on the whole Main defended well, the home supporters had to wait until the 71st minute before their side registered a noteworthy attempt on goal as Chris Laidlaw fired a 20-yard effort to which the Brandon goalkeeper did well to hold onto.
On a warm afternoon, goalkeeper Danny Nimmins, on for Rob Rodgerson for the final period, also drew acclaim with a superb save as the visitors looked to extend their lead.
But it was Percy Main who finished the stronger with Dan Sneap prominent.
He threatened down the right and had a shot across the face of goal which had the goalkeeper scrambling.
Laidlaw netted to level matters with 12 minutes remaining, but there was to be no further addition to the scoring and both sides would have been happy with a useful work out.
Percy Main visit Birtley Town on Wednesday night before the Northern Alliance premier division season starts in earnest on Saturday as the Villagers make the short trip to take on North Shields Athletic, 2.30pm kick-off.
Then Wednesday, August 12, will see Purvis Park stage its first home league game of the season as Killingworth Town are the opposition with a 6.15pm kick-off.
