NORTH Shields Lions Under-12s were crowned division five chanpions of the Pin Point Recruitment League.
It was an occasion that some dreamed of and many thought may never come, but 16 players made it happen.
Going into the game having won the last 13, there was no complacency.
And it was just as well as Wansbeck provided a stern test and proved to be worthy opponents.
The game was only a few minutes old when Wansbeck created the first chance.
However, the assured handling of Telford prevented any real threat.
The encounter proved tough for both sets of players, especially in midfield.
But after ten minutes Conway received the ball on the edge of the box and weaved his way into a shooting position before drilling the ball into the corner of the net.
This stung Wansbeck into action, and a corner on the left produced an equaliser.
But Shields hit straight back and captain Houghton won possession in the box and drilled a ferocious shot home to put the Lions 2-1 ahead at the break.
The Lions started the second half playing some neat football that has been their trade mark all season, and they went further ahead with two more goals from Conway as he completed his hat-trick with a stunning strike.
Despite going 4-1 down, Wansbeck did not give up, and continually pressed.
But following a Wansbeck attack, Conway was able to complete the Lions’ scoring and net his fourth of the game for a 5-1 scoreline.
The final whistle brought fantastic scenes of celebration from players and parents alike.
Manager Tony Gribbin was quick to congratulate each and every one of his squad for a fantastic season.
