The weather decimated the schedule in the Tyneside Amateur this week, but the big game at the top between second-placed North Shields Athletic Reserves and third-placed Gosforth Bohemian Reserves got the go-ahead.
Bohs would have moved to within a point of Athletic by completing the double over their hosts, but the game looked like ending goalless until the 87th minute when Carl Lough hammered home an unstoppable free kick to earn Shields the points and move them to just a point behind leaders Bedlington Juniors, albeit the Northumbrians have three games in hand.
Newcastle Medicals moved up to third-from-bottom as they reversed their 3-2 defeat to Ryton and Crawcrook Albion Reserves the previous Saturday, winning by the same scoreline. Greg Eru-Chijioke bagged a brace and was joined on the scoresheet by Darren Drew. Ryan Latimer and Steven Cain netted for Ryton.
Ponteland United Reserves are now up to fourth in the table after seven wins in their last eight matches. They beat Newcastle Chemfica Reserves 2-0, with Darren Parkes and Daniel Mupungu their marksmen.
The league are on the lookout for new clubs for the 2016-17 season, as well as potential new management committee members including anyone interested in being league secretary. Anyone who has an interest in either should contact Neville Cowey on firstname.lastname@example.org
