There were few clear cut opportunities on offer for either side over the course of the 90 minutes, despite the on-field presence of Gareth Bainbridge and in-form Dunston counterpart Malcolm Morien.

Bainbridge drew an easy save from Liam Connell in the opening exchanges, but not until the 17th minute did Shields come close to breaking the deadlock, a hooked back-to-goal effort from ex-Dunston forward Daniel Wilson looping off the far post and into the grateful hands of Connell.

Alex Francis ballooned over for the hosts past the half hour mark, but Billy Irwin’s men could have snatched the advantage just before the interval, full back Gary Shaw working his way into the area via a one-two with Francis and pulling a shot across goal.

Lee Mason had a shot on target inadvertently blocked by Bainbridge in the second half, but chances remained scarce on the Tyne, and the Robins number nine spurned a magnificent chance on the 55th minute with just the keeper to beat, but Connell produced a fine save to tip the ball onto the post.

Bainbridge could not divert a drilled Michael McKeown free kick towards goal from close range, and both McKeown and substitute Jack Devlin both flashed half-chances wide of goal.

At the other end, a last-gasp strike from Francis whistled high and wide from a narrow angle, but neither side could produce the necessary moment of quality to win the match outright on the night.
