In the Gary Hull Memorial Trophy game, North Shields striker Jack Devlin thought he had opened the scoring in the third minute when his shot hit the back of the net, only for the assistant to flag for offside.

This seemed to spur both sides on with Percy Main having a lot of the ball but never having a good chance to test Sean McCafferty in the Robins’ goal.

At half-time Shields assistant manager Andy Bowman made a few changes, bringing on Hughes, McKeown and Wilson.

These changes freshened the legs of North Shields who looked to push on and grab a winner, with Devlin going close on 58 minutes only to see his shot well saved with one hand by Main keeper Rob Rodgerson.

Two minutes later North Shields where awarded a corner taken by McKeown and it was met by Dan Wilson who planted his header into the top corner past the stranded keeper.

Percy Main struggled to get past the North Shields defence who went on to lift the trophy.

The penultimate pre-season game of the season ended in defeat to Team Northumbria as a much changed squad took on strong opposition.

In the 13th minute Mason’s shot was parried by the keeper straight to Gareth Bainbridge who was on hand to slot the ball home.

Team North equalised on 23 minutes through Gerrard Richardson, who did well to finish as he took on the Shields defence and slotted the ball past Kyle Hayes.

Team North took the lead on 50 minutes when Hayes’s fantastic one handed save fell to Ross McKeown who prodded home.

In the closing moments David Dormand made it 3-1 to the away side.
