Northern Alliance first division league leaders Percy Main Amateurs hope to get back into action this Saturday when Birtley St Joseph’s, who harbour promotion aspirations themselves, visit Purvis Park for a 2pm kick-off.
Main have not kicked a ball in anger since their 5-2 win over Cullercoats on January 3 due to a blank Saturday last weekend and a waterlogged pitch which scuppered the game at Blyth Isabella seven days previous,
Main, who saw their lead the table trimmed to 11 points following AFC Newbiggin’s 4-1 home win over Wooler last Saturday, will host a Birtley side who are one of only two teams who have beaten The Villagers in a league match this season, thanks to an uncharacteristic poor performance in a 2-1 defeat at their Birtley’s Eighton Banks base on November 1.
It was the first time the sides have met and substitute Sean Smith, on his only appearance to date for Percy Main this season, scored what turned out to be nothing more than a consolation for the visitors.
Since then Main have won seven of their eight games played and have progressed into the semi-final of the Bill Gardner Trophy following wins over Wideopen and Whitburn, where they will face an away tie at Lindisfarne on February 21.
Since relegation to the league’s middle tier at the end of last season, the team have averaged over three goals scored per league game, while boasting the division’s meanest defence.
The goals have been spread throughout the squad, with no less than 18 Percy Main players having found the net so far.
The main contributors have seen Dan Sneap lead the goal scoring charts with 11 strikes, while Sam Thompson has hit ten and Joe Betts seven.
To round off the month of January, Percy Main will host Gosforth Bohemians on January 31.
