AFTER winning the county round of the English Schools’ FA Danone seven-a-side tournament at Prudhoe High School in February, the boys from Redesdale Primary School in Wallsend represented Northumberland at the regional tournament recently.
The competition was played at Walkden High School in Salford, which meant a lengthy journey for the team – one made even longer by an unexpected two-hour delay due to a broken down coach.
When the boys finally arrived, more than two hours late, they were thrust straight into the action with highly competitive games against other county champions from all over the north of England.
The team played fantastically well in horrible weather conditions and against some much larger schools, eventually qualifying from their group into the knockout stages.
A tense semi-final followed, which Redesdale eventually won 2-1.
In the final the boys came up against a superb team from St Bernadette’s Primary School in Nunthorpe, Middlesbrough, and eventually lost.
During the local, county and regional rounds of the tournament, the boys from Redesdale never gave up, showed great skill, determination and played the game in the right spirit, wishing the opposing team well in the national finals.
Teachers, team managers and parents were proud of the boys’ achievements so far this season.
The team is managed by Ray Smith.
