Pre-season is more about fitness and performance than results but North Shields could fly high after giving Evo-Stik bound Spennymoor Town a run for their money.

Following a 3-0 win over Gateshead Reserves, the Shieldsmen had a number of enforced changes in personnel but this was an excellent bench mark for the coming season.

It was nip and tuck throughout with the Moors seeing more of the ball in the first period but the Robins keeping good shape.

Gareth Bainbridge and Dean Holmes went close for the Tynesiders but a 35th minute goal for the hosts separated the sides.

In the second period substitute Peter Glen-Ravenhill led the fightback with Dean Walker agonisingly close and unlucky not to get on the scoresheet.

Jon Ball, who donned the Robins gloves nine times in the last campaign, was a late call up and made one particularly outstanding save to keep his side in with a shout.

North Shields: Ball, Hook, Grey, Richardson, Parker, Hughes, Luccock, Coppen, Bainbridge, Carr, Holmes. Second half substitutes: Glen-Ravenhill, Walker, Turner, P Robinson, Taylor.

After hosting Team Northumbria on Wednesday, Shields are at Wallsend Boys Club on Friday evening (7.30pm) instead of the anticipated Saturday date.

On Wednesday, July 30, the Robins entertain Blyth Spartans (7.30pm) when it is hoped a number of North Shields’ all-conquering 1969 Wembley heroes will be in attendance including super-sub Tommy Orrick, a prolific marksman for both clubs.

Last pre-season Shields beat Blyth 4-3 in an absorbing spectacle with Gareth Bainbridge marking his debut with a brace and John Grey and Dean Walker also netting.
