Shanks and McDonald scoop Whitley Bay awards
Adam Shanks and Chris McDonald shared the honours at the Whitley Bay FC annual presentation night held at the Seahorse Club on Saturday.
Both players claimed three awards, and for star striker Shanks it was his fifth hat-trick of the season, the other four being achieved on the pitch.
He was named Player of the Year by the club’s directors and he also won the Golden Boot, having scored 42 goals, a club record for a player in his first season at the club.
His stunning 35-yard goal that gave Whitley the lead against Chorley in the FA Cup third qualifying round was voted Goal of the Season by the fans.
McDonald won the Young Player of the Year award and was also voted Supporters’ Club Player of the Year.
The young defender also won the Players’ Player of the Season award, voted for by his teammates.
There was a special award for Veronica Siddle, who is retiring after providing the highly acclaimed half-time hospitality for many years.
Club chairman Paul McIlduff paid tribute to the Supporters’ Club for their continued work behind the scenes.
Reflecting on an up and down season, he acknowledged the efforts of former manager Paddy Atkinson in leading the side to the third qualifying round of the FA Cup and thanked returning boss Ian Chandler for guiding the club through a hectic final three months of the season, which included a League Cup semi-final appearance.
He also congratulated the players for keeping going through a punishing schedule of three games a week and giving 100 per cent to the club.
Looking to the future, he said he was optimistic that the club would be challenging at the top end of the table next season.
Chandler praised his largely young squad for their efforts since his return to the club, highlighting the local derby victory over North Shields as one of their best performances.
