Sunderland target Manchester City’s Rodwell

JACK Rodwell IS a genuine target for Sunderland, as the Black Cats look to continue their success in the loan market.

Sunderland are among a host of clubs who have been repeatedly linked with Manchester City midfielder Rodwell this summer and the Echo understands that the England international is a player on the Black Cats’ shortlist.

City are ready to let Rodwell leave the Etihad after he has started just seven Premier League games since arriving in a £12million deal from Everton two years ago.

But, with the Premier League champions struggling to recoup their outlay on Rodwell, Sunderland are hopeful they can seal a season-long loan for the 23-year-old to boost a midfield which lost Jack Colback, Craig Gardner and Ki Sung-Yueng at the end of last season.

West Brom and Everton have also been linked with Rodwell, but the latter are thought to be far more serious rivals for his signature than the Baggies, who have other players further up their list of targets.

Everton saw a January loan bid to re-sign their academy product rejected by City, but Toffees boss Roberto Martinez is considering a fresh move this summer for a player who has been dogged by injuries since leaving Goodison Park.

Sunderland sporting director Lee Congerton has confirmed that the Black Cats are looking at loan targets – the club’s main area of success in the transfer market over the last few years.

Danny Rose, Danny Welbeck, Fabio Borini and Ki have all enjoyed successful loan stints on Wearside from Sunderland’s Premier League rivals.

Sunderland have asked Chelsea about signing teenage centre-half Kurt Zouma for the campaign, with Monaco interested in the £12million defender too.

But, crucially, Sunderland are looking to complement the loan signings with permanent captures, rather than relying too heavily on stop-gap solutions.

Sunderland are looking at a long-term addition to their central defensive ranks, as well as Zouma, albeit their pursuit of Ashley Williams ground to a halt last week when he penned a new deal at Swansea.

And the Black Cats are also weighing up a fresh bid for Cardiff’s Jordon Mutch to boost their midfield ranks after already signing Jordi Gomez on a free transfer from Wigan Athletic this summer.
